Adventures Abound at Spring Lilac Festival
— Annette Williams
The spring lilac blooming season is hard to predict. But when it arrives, the Lilac Festival at Fort Cross Old Timey Adventures is ready to offer its unique brand of fun and adventure.
Once the season gets under way, mountain lilac stems will be available for purchase every day, along with potted lilacs to take home and plant.
“The cold weather makes them bigger and more fragrant,” says Doreen Cross, owner of Fort Cross with her husband, Jesse.
But the festival itself — located at Fort Cross, 4425 Highway 78 in Santa Ysabel — has much more to offer besides the vibrantly colored blooms. Advance reservations may be made for activity and adventure packages. Depending on the package, guests may enjoy candle dipping, vase painting, a petting zoo and reptile show, hayrides, jug band show, archery, tomahawk throwing and a slingshot range.
Visit www.fortcross.com/lilac-festival for lilac season updates and to sign up for specific packages, or call 951-847-1904 for information.
Cross invites lilac-lovers to take a walk through their five-acre grove of organic lilacs and enjoy the “sweet smells and beautiful views of the Julian area.”
