Fourth Of July

Party for Patriots

242 Reasons to Celebrate 4th of July

- Ann Reilly Cole

If you want to celebrate civic pride with fellow patriots on Independence Day, then make your way to town center before Julian’s historic Main Street is closed to through traffic at 9 a.m.

The Julian Historical Society has been named the grand marshal for the hour-long parade that starts right at noon.

The show begins much earlier, though, as folks stake their spots along the sidewalks and storefronts, and talented performers come out to celebrate our nation’s 242nd birthday.

Fourth of July-themed merchandise in the windows of the Main Street merchants will put you in a patriotic mood. And if you forgot to dress for the occasion, you can buy an official 2019 parade T-shirt and help fund next year’s parade.

Before the parade steps off, vintage bi-planes and military training planes will fly over the town decked in red, white and blue to celebrate America’s history and the town’s past, which dates back to the Civil War era. Performances by the comical and flirtatious Julian Doves and Desperados acting troupe are sure to entertain the crowd. Patriotic music presented on three stages will lend a high note until the pre-parade show concludes with the unfurling of a giant American flag.

After the parade, American Legion Post 468 on Washington Street will continue the celebration with a delicious pit barbecue, a live band and a floor for dancing.

Culminating on the Fourth of July, the Julian Woman’s Club quilt show opens June 23 in Julian Town Hall, 2129 Main St. The show will offer a colorful array of stitched handiwork on exhibit, along with a chance to win a quilt designed by renowned quilter Eleanor Burns and made by the club’s members.

A patriot’s party like no other, Julian’s Independence Day celebration is both heartwarming and exciting.

Free public restrooms are available next to the brick building on Main Street and in the parking lot on B Street. Visit  www.julianparade.com and www.facebook.com/julianjuly4thparade for event updates.
