Julian’s climate and geographic location provide just the right combination of ingredients for wine making, and the perfect scenery for wine drinking. Just a few minutes’ drive from town along Julian Orchards Drive — with its picturesque vineyards and apple groves that inspired the road’s name and supply the vintners’ and cider makers’ presses — visitors will find Volcan Mountain Winery and Menghini Winery that serve up wit and wisdom to guests who come in for a taste.
Volcan Mountain Winery
In the shadow of Volcan Mountain, the Volcan Mountain Winery orchard is home to dozens of varieties of apples and grapes, which winemakers Jim and Mike Hart use to create responsibly produced sparkling, red, white, rose and dessert wines. The winery is located at 1255 Julian Orchards Dr. and is open Thursday through Monday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Call 760-765-3267 or visit volcanmountainwinery.com.
Customers are welcome to bring a picnic snack to pair with their wine purchases and are invited to join the wine club, which offers discounts and complimentary tastings and invitations to club events.
Just around the bend and down the road is Menghini Winery, a six-acre vineyard that produces some 4,000 cases of wine a year and is home to many popular Julian events year-round. Owners Mike and Toni Menghini, an active resident of Julian for many years, is quick with a smile and useful information about the region. The winery is located at 1150 Julian Orchards Dr. and is open Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Call 760-765-2072 or visit menghiniwinery.com.
Among the popular wines that Menghini produces locally is the annual batch of “stomp” wine made the oldfashioned way at the Julian Grape Stomp Festa held every September, where guests have the opportunity to kick off their shoes to stomp fresh grapes in giant vats.
